Memory Lane is a Michigan-licensed AFC Adult Foster Care home in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti specializing in residential memory care — all-inclusive $9,500/month flat rate, 1:3 daytime caregiver-to-resident ratio, every dementia subtype.

Michigan licenses small residential memory care facilities under the Adult Foster Care (AFC) designation. The AFC license is what allows us to operate six-bedroom homes with round-the-clock staffing in residential neighborhoods — a model purpose-built for dementia care that large corporate memory care campuses can't replicate.

If your loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia, they need specialized care to preserve their quality of life. As dementia progresses, care requirements evolve. At Memory Lane, our caregivers are specially trained and committed to encouraging meaningful moments, prioritizing your loved one's remaining abilities, and ensuring they remain engaged in the activities that bring them joy.

AFC Adult Foster Care

What an AFC home means for memory care

An Adult Foster Care (AFC) home is a Michigan-licensed residential care setting for adults who need 24-hour personal care, supervision, and protection — including older adults living with dementia. AFC licensing is regulated by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), which sets minimum standards for staffing, safety, medication management, and resident rights.

For families researching memory care in Michigan, the AFC license is what distinguishes a true residential care setting (six bedrooms in a home, on a residential street, with caregivers present 24/7) from a large corporate "memory care wing" attached to an assisted living tower. The license is the same — the experience is different.

Memory Lane is a licensed AFC home. We chose this model deliberately: small homes mean every caregiver knows every resident's history, preferences, and behavioral cues. That's not a feature — it's the entire point.

Pricing

Transparent, all-inclusive pricing

Unlike most assisted living facilities, our price does not increase when a resident needs additional care. Our flat monthly rate covers room and board, round-the-clock care, all meals, and care supplies.

Regular Room
Private bedroom, shared common spaces
$9,500/mo
Master Suite with Private Bath
Larger room, en-suite bathroom
$9,900/mo

We accept long-term care insurance and are approved by many long-term care insurance plans. Medicare and traditional health insurance don't cover long-term Alzheimer's care, and Medicaid doesn't reimburse for this level of care — but our team can walk you through your options.

Alzheimer's Care

Memory care for Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, affecting nearly 200,000 adults over 65 in Michigan. Caring for a person as they progress through the disease requires a tailored approach, a caring hand, and expert training.

At Memory Lane, we approach Alzheimer's care from a place of empathy and understanding, focusing on the person first. Caregivers receive in-depth training on managing Alzheimer's behaviors, changes, and challenges. Each of our six-bedroom houses is staffed with two caregivers throughout the day and one at night — a familiar face is always there by your loved one's side.

Our flat monthly rate does not change as Alzheimer's progresses and care needs increase. That predictability matters when a family is navigating the disease.

Dementia Subtype Care

We care for every subtype of dementia

While Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia, many Michigan families are navigating other forms — each requiring a personalized approach. Memory Lane's caregivers are professionally trained to support residents living with:

  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Lewy Body dementia
  • Frontotemporal dementia (FTD)
  • Vascular dementia
  • Parkinson's dementia
  • Huntington's dementia
  • Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome
  • Other dementia subtypes

Many memory care facilities won't accept residents with Lewy Body dementia because of behavioral challenges. We do — and our staffing model is built for it.

Our Approach

Caregivers chosen for character, then trained

Rather than hiring people who have been in the industry going from one workplace to the next, we employ individuals who live to serve others. Caregiving skills can be taught — integrity can't.

Every caregiver receives full skills orientation and dementia training during onboarding, plus required ongoing monthly training to ensure our work is constantly improving.

On-site visits from professionals we trust

We maintain relationships with many professionals in the Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor area who provide additional support inside our homes:

  • ·Visiting physicians
  • ·Visiting podiatrists
  • ·Recreational therapists
  • ·Physical, occupational, and speech therapists
  • ·In-home lab and X-ray services
  • ·Therapists specializing in elder care
  • ·Hairdressers
  • ·Hospice services
